Miss Spokane Monday: The Pursuit of Happyness

“In every version of the Declaration of Independence, there was always the words ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” said Christopher Gardner, author of “The Pursuit of Happyness,” during his presentation on Monday.

Gardner spoke at the Women Helping Women Luncheon at the Spokane Convention Center, in which I was able to attend. The luncheon was raising money for the the Women Helping Women Fund, a non-profit organization which allots grants to other organizations in the area.10366285_702045849855955_6986005012207598918_n

My duties for the day were greeting guests as they arrived and helping direct them to their tables. I loved getting to interact with everyone. I event received a rose from a kind gentleman.

Once everyone took their seats it was time for lunch and the main event.

Lunch consisted of a turkey and bacon sandwich, pasta salad, fruit and a delicious orange dream cupcake!

Gardner then took the stage and began with, “and no Will Smith will not be here.”

For those of you who don’t know, Will Smith stared in the movie “The Pursuit of Happyness” in 2006, which is based around Gradner’s life.

The story is a true story about a struggling single father who is just trying to provide for his son. Gardner today is still a single father with two children, but worked his way to the top of the stockbroker market.

His main message was “never let anyone tell you can’t do something.” Below is his favorite clip from the movie.

I throughly enjoyed his speech and I am even more inspired to follow my own dreams.

Oh ya, at the end of his presentation he finished with “oh, and I am writing you a check for $10,000 right now.”photo 1

I was sitting next to the Executive Director of the organization who immediately burst into tears of joy. I think it’s safe to safe there were a lot of tears of joy at that moment. What an incredible monetary gift.

Overall, the event was quite remarkable.

Until next week,

Kailee
